THE TAIWAN PEDIATRIC ASSOCIATION HISTORY,1690-2005

The Taiwan Pediatric Association, previously known as Pediatric Association of the Republic of China, was founded on the 3rd of April, just one day before the annual Taiwanese Children's day in 1960, for the promotion of child health and its research and teaching and to foster international cooperation among pediatricians.
This Association became a member of the International Pediatric Association (IPA) in May 1961, and sent a group of delegates to the International Congresses of Pediatrics (ICP) held in Lisbon (1962), Tokyo (1965), Mexico City (1968) and Vienna (1971) and each ICP thereafter. It also sent a delegation to the First Asian Congress of Pediatrics held in Manila in 1974, regrettably, this association walked out of IPA in October 1973 and of APSSEAR in 1974, simply because of a political reason.

The Association has always been an advocate for the children of Taiwan, bringing influences to bear at regional, national, and international levels. Members of the Association, totaling more than 3,500 by 2002 with board certified pediatricians for 2,500 have continued working hard and staved for excellence in clinical and academic pediatrics. During the past 43 years, its official journal, Acta Paediatrica Sinica(now called the ACTA PAEDIATRICA TAIWANICA), has developed from a quarterly to a bimonthly journal with one supplement and has been entered in the Index Medicus and MEDLAR systems.

 The Association has been led in the past 43 years by presidents: Huo-Yao WEI, Chiung-Lin CHEN, Chin-Yun LEE, Hung-Chi LUE and Kue-Shiung HSIEH, Tso-Ren WANG, Tsu-Fuh YEH,also by secreary-generals:Jui-Yun HSU, Ting-Chien LEE, Chiung-Hui CHEN, Hung-Chi LUE, Shen-Hui CHEN , Kue-Shiung HSIEH and Tso-Ren WANG, Kai-Hsin LIN, Lie-Jou Wu .

In July 1989, the Association was, to its gratitude, re-admitted to IPA and APSSEAR during the 19th ICP held in Paris. The Association hopes for more expert advice and help from APSSEAR, IPA, UNICEF, and WHO, so that it may accomplish its unfulfilled tasks, such as more subspecialization in pediatrics, renovation of the birth registration system, health insurance coverage in children and founding of children's health centers.
